Stella & Dot Founder Jessica Herrin: I'm 'Living My One Precious Life In Accordance With My Values' The Huffington Post | By Margaret Wheeler Johnson Posted: 08/28/2013 11:12 am EDT | Updated: 08/28/2013 12:32 pm EDT
What haven't you done that you want to do? Stella & Dot is at the beginning of its potential as an entrepreneurial opportunity for women, so we'll continue to grow. Personally, I don't want for anything. I feel so lucky to have a wonderful husband and children. I'm sure there's other things that I want to accomplish, but off the top of my head, I just want to enjoy every day with my [kids]. We are in that parenting nirvana stage where life is easy, [and they] still like hanging out with us! Right now, I am just enjoying every minute.

What has been the most stressful part of your career? When I had a toddler and a newborn and [was] figuring how I was going to build a company and make sure that I was the one taking my daughter to swim class on Fridays. That was when I was most stressed, trying to reconcile these two people that I felt were within me, this very, very driven entrepreneur and this very old-school nurturing mother. I was raised Italian. [Part of me] wants to have ten kids and do everything with them all day. Could you have the life you have if you worked for someone else? No. I wouldn't be as happy. Being in charge of my own schedule [and] running my own business is critical for my life plan. I could be a Stella & Dot stylist and run my own business -- it doesn't have to be something that I created -- but I need to be in control of my own calendar. What advice would you give your 25-year-old self? It's not about being right, it's about making it right and helping everyone around you be successful. I've always been a person who's go go go, so I think when I was 25, I didn't understand when other people didn't want to devote themselves to only work. I was a terrible, terrible people manager at 25. Please contact me for information on how you can own your own home based business.

Who does grocery shopping, bill paying, etc. at your house? I outsource the laundry and grocery shopping. When I first had kids, I tried to be a superwife and a supermom and do everything, and I realized that was a formula for disaster. My kids don't need me to be the one making a five-course dinner. They need me to be on the floor playing with them. We can eat something somebody else made. We can get something delivered. I have a golden rule I live by which is if [the task involves being] eyeball to eyeball with my kid, I do it. If [it doesn't], I can get somebody else to do that so I can spend more time being eyeball to eyeball. Do you have a work persona and non-work persona? No. I think it would be exhausting to try to be somebody else at work [other than] who you really are. Are you close friends with anyone you work with or worked with in the past? Absolutely. I've had other executives tell me [not to], but I just don't understand that. If you spend all this time with people that you work with, to not feel like they're your friends is crazy. How do you define success? Living my one precious life in accordance with my values. It's not a monetary figure, it's the amount of impact and joy that I'm creating in my life. I want to see the world and travel and have adventures. I want to have a full and rich life as a mother, as an individual, and from a work perspective, I want to make an impact. I want to get up in the morning and know that what I do makes other people's lives a bit better. Are you successful? Absolutely. I always want to achieve more, but I think the beauty of being 40 is that you recognize that if you wake up and you're happy that day, you're successful. What does an average day look like for you? I wake up early in the morning and work from home, then I am usually in the office or in the field with stylists, and then I'm home for dinner with my family. I may log back on and do a few more things from home. Do you exercise? I feel like I don't have time not to exercise. I can spend 28 minutes on a three mile run and feel like I get back three hours of energy. Long ago I realized I'm never going to have enough time to get everything I want to do done, so I might as well exercise and still have all that other stuff to do. Some things are going to be left undone every single day, and exercise cannot be one of them. Where do you do your best work? Running. That's why I've committed to exercise. My morning run is when my head is most clear and when I synthesize all of the things that are going on in my head. When I'm running I'm always three to five years out in my mind. As a leader that's where I need to spend time. Has a big meeting ever conflicted with the school play or some version of that scenario, and what did you do? I control the meeting schedule, so I go to the school play, and I move [the meeting]. [When you're] running a business, there isn't [often] something that can't be moved up or back 30 minutes. My travel schedule [i]s my biggest challenge, but I plan very carefully a year in advance around my kids' school calendar. [My husband and I] have [also] evolved our careers over time to work together as a family. His used to involve a lot more travel, and he switched his role so that we weren't going in two different directions at the same time. Why do you do what you do? [When I was running WeddingChannel.com], we were fortunate enough to be featured on Oprah. [The episode] was all about pursuing your passion to find your fortune and develop a business. [Afterward] all these women reached out to me and said, "What advice do you have for starting a business?" At that time, I honestly felt like I didn't have a good answer. It may have looked good from the outside, but I worked every night and weekend. I had a created a business that ran me versus me running it. With Stella & Dot, the idea was, "How could you have the amazing elements of being an entrepreneur without having the high cost of capital to start it?" I became obsessed with reinventing the idea of flexible entrepreneurship. The modern woman had changed since home-based entrepreneurship had been thought up a hundred years ago. I think women deserve a better answer for, "How can I lead a life [at] the intersection of all the other roles that women play in their lives and being an independent accomplished professional?" We need careers that can ebb and flow around our life. I do what I do because it's a complete passion project, and I'm utterly convinced that it needs to exist. What work would you do if not this? I would do this. With Stella & Dot I have found my calling. I've done other things that have been commercially successful, but it's not enough. It left me wanting more, and that feeling of wanting more led me down this path. What we do really matters. We empower women. Is there still a glass ceiling? Have you hit it? Glass ceilings still exist in corporate America. I started my own business and became my own boss, [so] nobody's holding me back but me. There is no ceiling. I [also] believe [I haven't hit it] because I have never acknowledged that being a female would be a barrier for me. I've never thought to myself, I can do anything a man can do. I've just always thought I can do anything. Do women have an obligation to help other women at work? One hundred percent. Because women are still trying to navigate the dual responsibility of being the lynchpin of all matters in the home and achieving career[s] worthy of their brains and ambition, we need each other's help. I have a VP of strategy right now on a two month sabbatical in Uganda. That's not easy and convenient for the rest of the company, but we're going to make it work because that's [who] we want to be. Mentoring her isn't just about, "Here's how you can broaden your skills and broaden your career." It's about providing an environment that says, "I get it. If you don't have QT with your kids, you're going to drop out of this work force. So were gonna be a company where somehow that can work out." Please contact me for information on how you can own your own home based business.

What does it take to get to the top -- without losing your center? Our “Making It Work” series profiles successful, dynamic women who are standouts in their fields, peeling back the "hows" of their work and their life, taking away lessons we can all apply to our own. When Jessica Herrin started selling jewelry out of her living room, everyone thought she was crazy. She was a Dell executive at the time and already a proven e-commerce entrepreneur. At 24, she had co-founded the site that eventually became WeddingChannel.com. "All of my friends and family were like, 'What on earth are you doing?'" she told the Huffington Post. "I [said], 'Trust me. This is going to be fantastic.'" She has since built her living room trunk shows into Stella & Dot, a direct-sales jewelry company valued at $450 million. The business model resembles the commission-based social shopping and home entrepreneurship models of old -- think Tupperware parties and Mary Kay reps -- merged with ecommerce, marketed via social media. The jewelry is chic -- you can picture most of it being sold at boutiques in New York or L.A. -- but the most compelling aspect of Stella & Dot, especially for the women who become sales reps or "stylists," may be the way Herrin has positioned the company as an instrument for social good. Herrin said her mission in founding and growing the company is to offer women the professional autonomy and flexible schedule that are for her the most rewarding and, especially since she became a mother, essential benefits of entrepreneurship. Now 40, Herrin, who lives in the Bay area with her husband of 14 years and their 7- and 9-year-old daughters, has proven her doubters wrong. Not that their opinions set her back, she said. "I realized that getting to the business and the life I wanted involved caring a lot less about what other people thought." This is the Gano Life Style. The strike was the largest so far in a 10 month campaign that began with 200 workers striking in New York last November and which spread to Detroit and Chicago in July. Organisers said the strikes scheduled a day after the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington and a few days before Labor Day were being held in 60 cities and had spread to the south including Tampa and Raleigh and the west with workers in Los Angeles and San Francisco taking part. In New York the Democratic mayoral hopeful Christine Quinn took part in a march with several hundred workers and protesters before entering a McDonalds near the Empire State Building on Thursday morning. Local organisers in Detroit said at least three stores had been shut down because of the strikes. One was a Checkers restaurant the other two were Churchs chicken restaurants. The striking workers are part of a coalition of unions campaign groups clergy and community members.

Gano Life Saved My Brother In Law's Life

My brother in law, Felton "Fred" Frederick, was diagnosed with stomach cancer two years ago. The doctors administered a very serious chemotherapy regiment. He had to get treatment weekly. It got so bad, they actually gave him a portable kit that gave him chemo daily. They gave him a year to live. He began to take the Gano Life Capsules and drinking the Gano Life Coffee. He began to feel better. He never lost his hair. He never stopped going. They would have to track him down when it was time for a check up. He was amazingly progressing instead of regressing and a few weeks ago,the doctor said the cancer cells did not spread, and he was on the road to recovery. Today, he no longer need the portable chemo kit. He drives himself everywhere. He
is on the go all day, everyday, He even works a few days a week. The doctors told him he was a miracle, because he should be dead. When they asked him how did he do it, he says, it was the Gano Life Coffee and Capsules. Contact me for more information.

Gano Life Is The Best Part 2

Why is GanoLife the right choice for me? Robert Hollis said "because its the one I picked." I want to finish it. If you leave the company, and go somewhere else, you will still have to learn the same thing you are learning here. You need to find something that people are addicted to. Addiction is you have to change the way you think about it! Why do people just name and tag? Human beings don't know how to explain so they tag. You have to come into grips with what you want to do. If you want to be a person of the bad thing finder, it takes no skill and effort. It takes effort to find something good about people. GanoLife. What if addiction is good for you? Our ganoderma is an upgrade of something that is already good. A more superior product. The number one nutrition and a company where my income went up over the summer and holidays. Some companies sell air and lifestyle.

You may forget to drink your juice, but you will never forget to drink your coffee. Why, because its addiction. You have to have your coffee. You can't start your day without it. Don't talk to me before I have my coffee. I can even prepare my coffee half asleep. You get the picture?

Gano Life Now Has Green Coffee Bean Weight Loss Capsules

Green Coffee Beans May Aid Weight Loss Supplement Linked to Weight Loss in Small, Early Study Save This Article For Later Share this: Font size:AAA By Kathleen Doheny WebMD Health News Reviewed by Louise Chang, MD March 28, 2012 -- Ground green coffee beans, taken daily, seem to spur steady weight loss, according to new research. In a small, 22-week study, researchers found that 16 overweight men and women lost an average of 17 pounds. They took the green (unroasted) coffee beans in supplement form and, for comparison, took a placebo at a different point of the study. They did not change their diet. They were physically active. They lost more while on the supplements than while on placebo. They lost the most when on the higher of two coffee bean doses. "We don't think it's the caffeine in it," says Joe Vinson, PhD, professor of chemistry at the University of Scranton. He presented the findings Tuesday at the annual meeting of the American Chemical Society in San Diego. The results echo those of earlier studies, but Vinson used a larger dose of the green coffee beans.

Gano Life For Children

FRIDAY, August 16, 2013 (HealthDay News) — Five-year-olds who drink soda every day may have more behavior problems than kids with soda-free diets, a new study of U.S. children suggests. After looking at nearly 3,000 urban families, the researchers found that 5-year-olds' scores on a standard measure of aggression tended to climb along with their soft drink intake. Kindergartners who downed four or more servings per day were particularly aggressive, based on mothers' reports. They were twice as likely as other kids to get into fights or destroy property, and also displayed more attention problems than children who didn't drink soda. The findings were reported Aug. 16 in the Journal of Pediatrics. Experts were quick to stress that none of this proves that soda, itself, is at fault. "This is a correlation. We're not saying soda causes aggression," said lead researcher Shakira Suglia, an assistant professor of epidemiology at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health in New York City. Still, Suglia added, there are already reasons to keep children from drinking sugar-laden and caffeinated sodas. "There's no nutritional benefit of soda for children," she said. A child psychologist not involved in the research agreed. It's "impossible to disentangle" the effect of one part of a child's diet on aggression, said Rahil Briggs, director of pediatric behavioral health services at the Children's Hospital at Montefiore in New York City. "That being said, the American Academy of Pediatrics has repeatedly advocated for the elimination of soft drinks in children's diets [and] schools," Briggs added. "Not limiting their intake, but total elimination." The academy is a leading group of U.S. pediatricians. That advice, Briggs noted, is based on evidence linking kids' soft drinks to increased risks of obesity, cavities and, possibly, behavior problems. Some past research has tied high soda intake to aggressive behavior in older kids, Suglia said. The new study extends the findings to young children. The results are based on more than 2,900 mother-child pairs from 20 U.S. cities, many of whom were from single-mom, lower-income households. At age 5, the mothers reported, 43 percent of the children drank soda at least once a day, with 4 percent downing four or more every day. Overall, the children's scores on an aggression scale rose in tandem with their soda intake, Suglia's team found. Those scores were based on moms' responses to a standard questionnaire, asking how often their child got into physical fights, destroyed property or otherwise acted out. "We tried to account for other things that could affect both a child's soda intake and aggressive behavior," Suglia said. That included mothers' education levels, any reports of domestic abuse and how often kids watched TV or ate sweets. In the end, high soda intake — four or more a day — was still linked to a higher risk of aggressive behavior. Kindergartners' Soda Intake Linked to Aggression in Study The researchers could not account for everything that might explain the link, however. "There's still a possibility that something else is driving this," Suglia said. It's also not clear how drinking soda would directly affect young children's behavior. Suglia said that in theory, caffeine or sugar might play a role — though scientific studies have doubted the common notion that sugar makes kids hyper or aggressive. "One of the limitations of our study is that we don't know what types of soda kids were drinking," Suglia said. "We don't know if they were regular or diet, or caffeine-free." The beverage industry dismissed the findings. "It is a leap to suggest that drinking soda causes these or any other behavioral issue. The science does not support that conclusion," the American Beverage Association said in a statement. "The authors themselves note that their study 'is not able to identify the nature of the association between soft drinks and problem behaviors.' Importantly, our member companies do not promote or market the consumption of soft drinks to children in the age group examined in this study." However, Suglia and Briggs both said parents would do well to ban sugary drinks for kids. Water is a calorie-free way to hydrate, and milk gives kids needed nutrients, such as protein, calcium and vitamin D. Even fruit juice, Suglia noted, should be avoided if it has added sugar. "Whether or not research reveals that this link between soda and aggression holds true, there are plenty of well-documented negative effects of soda consumption in childhood," Briggs said. "Why take chances?" she added.

Gano Life is the Best Assurance Part 3

Surviving Without Insurance For those who are uninsured and earnestly waiting for the Affordable Care Act , here are some tips for survival: 1. Healthy Diet and Exercise An apple a day will not always keep the doctor away, but a healthy diet paired with exercise will keep your immune system performing at its best. To reap the health benefits of physical activity, one must combine aerobic and muscle-strengthening activities, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Physical activity can prevent heart disease, type 2 diabetes and help control blood pressure, blood sugar, and weight. Children and teenagers should get an hour or more of physical activity each day, which can be spread out throughout the day, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Adults are recommended to engage in five hours of exercise per week, mixing aerobic workouts and strength training for maximum benefits. Eat a diet that is low in fat, high in whole grains and well balanced with lean proteins and leafy veggies. Avoid sugary beverages or soda. Instead, snack on healthy alternatives like fresh fruits and vegetables, low-fat cheese, yogurt and nuts and seeds. 2. Rest Know when to rest. If you feel the pre-symptoms of the flu, like the aches and shivers, take a day off to let your body take care of itself. 3. Have An Emergency Contact Hopefully you're lucky enough to have a friend nearby that can be you emergency contact. A familiar face in an unnerving hospital setting is always comforting. 4. Financial Assistance For those that are uninsured, many hospitals have financial assistance programs based on annual income. Meet with the financial counselor, they will help you figure out the best payment plan for you and your family.

Gano Life is the Best Assurance Policy Part 2

“I developed back pains from sitting at the desk for long hours and carrying heavy equipment for shooting, but I can't do anything until I'm insured,” Consunji said. “I lived in perpetual fear of getting into a serious accident and being unable to afford treatment.” Sherry Glied, the Dean of New York University Wagner and former Professor of Healthy Policy and Management at Columbia’s Mailman School of Public Health, acknowledges the increase of freelancers and college graduates without insurance. Children under 26 can stay on their parents’ plan, and starting in January 2014, they’ll be able to get insurance, she said. But what can parents without insurance do for their children? Non-group health insurance plans, though expensive, may be an option, Glied said. “Just hope you don’t get sick before January,” she added. “It’s a very scary thing for families without insurance. A lot of people end up going bankrupt.” Amy Chyan: In the ER The walk from my room to the nearest hospital is a reasonable five-minute walk, but it felt like 10 seconds in my panic. It was as if the fast forward button was on. Once in the ER, the register puts on my hospital bracelet on and lies me down for an EKG. The stern nurse is not happy when I fidget out of nervousness. She scolds me three times for moving and says, "What's more important, your life or your phone?" I chose a seat right by the entrance of the ER's wait room. A woman on a wheelchair is squirming and screaming. The nurses don't pay attention. A homeless woman is sleeping in the far corner, her luggage in tow. I debate whether to call my parents again. Every step of the way, I make sure to let the nurse or the register know I am uninsured. Healthcare Bills are ‘Crippling’ My 10 hours in the ER boil down to blood tests, chest x-rays, a lot of waiting and more blood tests. The diagnoses is that I had an anxiety attack because of the chest pain, though source of pain is still a mystery and needs to be followed up with a cardiologist. After a year of interning for free full time, paying for graduate school tuition and living in Manhattan, an uninsured hospital bill can be financially and mentally crippling. My bill amounted to about $2,300. Would this anxiety attack have happened if I was in back home in Toronto and knew I had access to free emergency care? It's tough to say. But certainly every time I don't feel well in New York, I am faced with the high cost of healthcare.

Broke and Uninsured: My Visit to the ER Amy Chyan thought she was having a heart attack. Unemployed and uninsured, she navigates America's costly healthcare system. By Amy Chyan, Special to Everyday Health | Follow @EverydayHealth Amy-Chyan-Healthcare The pain in my chest intensifies. My heart is beating so fast I feel as if there are guppies jumping out of my throat. My extremities tingle, and I become light headed. I squat down so I don't faint and knock myself out. I Google my symptoms, clicking on the first link under "chest pain on left side." Everything points to heart problems. I start to panic, wondering how I will pay for a visit to the ER if I need it. I am unemployed, uninsured, and I might be having a heart attack. Getting Sick: A Horror Story As a non-resident from Canada, my coping mechanism for getting sick in New York City is to simply… not. When I do come down with the flu, I end up staying in bed and relying on the only remedy I know: Nyquil, Gatorade and the fetal position with lots of movie-watching in bed. Today was different. Today I might've actually worried myself sick because I was scared about how expensive the hospital would be. My non-American friends and I like to trade horror stories of paying obscene amounts to go see the doctor. I am not an anomaly when it comes to not being able to afford healthcare. Uninsured: Affording Healthcare Almost 16 percent of Americans are uninsured, and the number of employer-sponsored insurance is also dropping, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. That means 48.6 million Americans are without health insurance, and it’s affecting our youth. The group most likely to be uninsured is young adults ages 19 to 34, according to a 2012 nationwide survey report by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Uninsured rates were highest among part-time workers and the unemployed, although one in seven full-time workers is also uninsured. It’s $1,000 for blood work here, $30,000 for an appendectomy there. These stories are passed around like warning tales, and we grimace in unison and quickly vow to never get sick. Uninsured: America’s Youth Bianca Consunji, an associate video producer at the online publication Mashable, recently received full-time benefits. But as an intern and freelancer, she had no healthcare benefits and depended on over-the-counter medications.

Gano Life Makes You Happy

Stroke Victim Dubbed 'Mr. Happy' No Longer Able To Feel Sadness.
Malcolm Myatt, a 68-year-old grandfather from England, is smiling a lot these days. And with good reason. After doctors told him a stroke had affected the part of his brain that controls emotions, he and his wife, Kath, realized he could no longer feel sadness. "I am never depressed. Being sad wouldn't help anything anyway," the retired truck driver told The Telegraph. "I would definitely rather be happy all the time than the other way round. It's an advantage really. "The stroke could have become my worst enemy but I wouldn't let it," added the man dubbed "Mr. Happy" by the British media. "Now I barely even notice that I don't feel sadness.” Kath Myatt told reporters that her husband's "childish" behavior is "infectious." "When he starts laughing everyone in the room does," she said. "If he's in hysterics, everyone else is too. He livens up any room. Everyone misses him when he's not there." The American Stroke Association confirms that, because a stroke impacts the brain, a victim's personality can be affected. But, generally speaking, depression is the most common emotional change experienced after a stroke. Myatt suffered his stroke in January 2004, after which he spent 19 weeks in the hospital. His wife also said he's lost the ability to judge what is and isn't appropriate to say in public. "It's worst when we go to a funeral. He'll still be smiling and telling jokes while everyone else is completely somber," she said. "Most of the time people know him and understand, but we do try to keep him to one side just in case." Over the years, strokes have impacted people in a wide variety of ways. Only last year, a 27-year-old British man named Chris Birch said he woke up gay after suffering a stroke. Every year, some 15 million people worldwide suffer a stroke. After dementia, stroke is the second leading cause of disability.

GanoLife is an amazing opportunity that is available to one and all - regardless of age, educational background or experience. But there is one important concept that is vital to your success at GanoLife; and that’s the art of duplication! Duplication is the ability to create a formula for success that you can pass on quickly and easily to others, who will in turn pass on what they have learned, and so on, and so on. The end result is a thriving organization that can elevate your income and lifestyle in a short period of time. At GanoLife, we’ve taken all of the guesswork out of duplication through our new Coffee Breaks and EXPOSURE PACKS. A Coffee Break is a small gathering where you simply provide samples of GanoLife’s delicious beverage line, and then play a short presentation video for your guests to watch. That’s it. What could be simpler? All that you need is a convenient location (your house) and a good supply of product. That’s where EXPOSURE PACKS* come in. *GanoLife’s new EXPOSURE PACKS have replaced our previous X-Packs. Effective 8/5/2013, our original X-Packs are no longer available. Gano Life Is Recession Proof

80% of Americans Face Near Poverty - No Jobs, No Economic Recovery. Four out of five US adults comes to grips with joblessness, near-poverty or reliance on welfare for at least some parts of their lives. Over 41 percent of the nation's poor are whites, according to a new report. In 2011, 46.2 million people in the US were living in poverty and the nation's official poverty rate was 15 percent, up from 14.3 percent in 2009, according to the US Census Bureau. That figure appears to be the highest number seen in the 52 years for which poverty estimates have been recorded. Although poverty rates for Blacks and Hispanics are proportionately nearly three times higher, by absolute numbers, the predominate face of the poor is white, the latest report shows. Economic insecurity among whites is said to be more common than as shown in the government's poverty data, engulfing over 76 percent of white adults by the time they turn 60, according to a new economic gauge being published next year by Oxford University Press.
